Microsoft has become the latest significant tech company to reverse a pandemic era hiring spree in the face of a slowing economy, as it announced plans to shed 10,000 workers by the end of March, or nearly 5 percent of its staff. Despite making its first company wide job cuts in years, the move was less swingeing than job reductions at some of Microsoft’s rivals. This month, Amazon announced plans to cut 18,000, while software rival Sales force, which had almost 80,000 employees at the end of October, said it would cut 10 percent of its staff. Facebook and WhatsApp parent Meta noted late last year it would cut about 13 percent of its work force.
The job cuts come amid a sharp slowdown in Microsoft’s revenue growth since the middle of last year. Revenue rose 18 per cent in its previous financial year, to the end of June, as a pandemic-led explosion in remote work and other changes boosted demand for new PCs and cloud-computing services. Microsoft is expected to report growth of only 2 per cent in its earnings next week. Despite the cuts, Nadella said that Microsoft would keep hiring and signalled another big wave of investment as the software group tries to take the lead in a new wave of technology based on the latest advances in artificial intelligence.
Why is Microsoft firing so many people? I'm pretty sure they have the money to sustain these 10,000 people for at least 4-5 years.
ReplyDeleteEspecially since they did very well during the pandemic. PC games, PCs and other related devices have been selling very well since 2020.
DeleteMaybe these layoffs also have something to do with the productivity levels of these 10,000? I mean, Nadella said that Microsoft would keep hiring so maybe they are weeding out the good from the not so good?
DeleteEven if Microsoft's revenue has declined I still don't think they should have fired so many people. 10,000 is a big number. Then add that up to what Amazon, Meta, Sales Force and others are doing and we have a lot of people without a job.
DeleteI dislike companies having to fire people but in the current times this needs to happen. I don't know if 10,000 is a big number for Microsoft and if they needed to lay off so many people, but current times demand it I think. I just hope that the remaining people are treated better and have more job security.
